As of 2014, millennials make up 36 percent of the U.S. workforce and by 2020, nearly half (46 percent) of all U.S. workers will be Millennials. The problem for most business owners and executives is your “twenty-something” employees don’t know how to solve the problems you face today, let alone the ones that you will encounter in the years to come.

It’s not their fault, they have grown up with digital technology that helps them think their way through the day. Their education is based on standardized testing with questions they memorized the answers too. If they can’t find it on-line, then it doesn’t exist. If it’s not on the first page of Google, then it’s not important. If they have a problem, they can text their friends or post it to Facebook for answers. They are part of a mobile generation that is used to finding, buying or getting almost everything they want through a click of a computer button.

Problem Solving is the ability to define, analyze and diagnose key components of a problem to formulate a solution. And, the iPad, iPhone, Android, or Kindle doesn’t do this kind of reasoning. Anyone can click a button, but when it comes to conceptual thinking, decision making, creativity, flexibility, conflict management, etc…many millennials need development.

Now the problem is yours because if you want millennial employees who can

  • Think outside of the box
  • Anticipate needs
  • Take calculated risks
  • Solve customer issues without a script
  • Assume responsibility
  • Make reasonable decisions without having to call a manager

Then you will need to train them to the level you need.
